It is customary to celebrate joyful events in life by, among other things, gift giving. And weddings are absolutely no exception! From the time the engagement is announced until the last guest has left the wedding reception, the gift giving opportunities are abundant. Here are some general things to keep in mind when giving and receiving gifts during the wedding and pre-wedding festivities.

Engagement Parties, though not mandatory, are a wonderful way to announce your upcoming nuptials. Guests invited to the engagement party are not obligated to bring gifts. They may choose to, especially if the purpose for the party is known ahead of time. If presents are brought to the party, you may not want to open them in front of the whole group, so as not to single out guests who did not bring gifts. The more formal an engagement party is, the more the implication exists that gifts are expected. If you do not wish to burden your guests with the obligation of bringing a gift, you can always make the announcement a surprise! Presents that come after the announcements are made should be recognized with a “thank you” note.

Wedding Gifts can be sent out as soon as guests receive invitations. Most couples register with two to three stores. Traditionally couples registered for china, crystals, or glassware, but today they can register for just about anything! The fine china and linens are still popular at department stores like Macy’s, but with specialty stores such as Crate & Barrel, and national chains like Target also offering gift registries the range of products becomes very broad, including unconventional items like sports equipment, or patio furniture. Gift registries are useful, but by no means mandatory. It is considered presumptuous to list wedding registries in your invitations. Guests who wish to find out where the couple might be registered should ask someone in the wedding party, a family member, or other people who are helping out with the planning. In other words, you rely on word of mouth rather than telling your guests directly where they might find a gift for you. Completing a registry can be helpful, but guests should not feel they must purchase something from your registry. Some people may still prefer the element of surprise when giving a gift, or might have something personal in mind to give to the couple. Contrary to popular belief, there is no calculable amount of money each person attending a wedding should spend on a wedding gift. It is not the amount of money spent on the reception divided by the number of guests. A gift should be a token of affection, and is not intended to pay for the wedding. However, to not send a gift altogether is in poor taste. A wedding invitation carries with it an obligation to send a gift, even if you cannot attend the actual wedding. Depending on your relationship with the couple, the gift can be small, or something more substantial. When sending out invitations, keep in mind that guests who are invited may feel the need to send a gift whether or not they can attend. So it might be a good idea to send just wedding announcements to those who live far away and may not be able to make it. If for some reason the wedding is cancelled, it is absolutely necessary to return the gifts.

The Bridal, or Wedding Shower is the next occasion where gifts are purchased for the couple. The shower is typically thrown for either just the bride, or as is more and more popular, for the bride and groom together. Shower gifts can be elaborate, or very casual depending on the type of gathering. The tone is usually set by the hosts, and communicated to the guests in the invitation. Showers are usually smaller, more intimate get-togethers for close friends and family. Legend has it the first shower was thrown for a couple deeply in love, but lacking the money to marry. Their friends and family got together and “showered” the couple with gifts to help them start their new life together. Today, the tradition lives, but it’s more of an opportunity for friends to gather with the pre-nups before their big day. Gifts for a shower generally do not come from the wedding registry, although it is okay if they do. The host of the party should specify in the invitation what kind of shower is to take place. Often those who plan a wedding shower opt for a theme. The theme serves to bring focus to the day’s events, and can be anything related to the couple’s interests such as a hobby, a favorite film, or a beloved vacation spot. One practical theme idea is the honeymoon destination. For instance, if the newlyweds plan to honeymoon in Venice, have an Italian themed shower! Instruct guests to bring gifts that are related to the theme. These can be travel books, English-Italian pocket dictionaries, luggage, etc. Extend the theme to the food, wedding favors, music, and decorations. Even games and entertainment can be connected to the theme. Hopefully by the end of the shower everyone will have had fun, and the bride and groom will be better prepared for their trip.

Rehearsal Dinner/Lunch usually takes place within a week of the wedding itself. It is the last time the couple will get together with all of their attendants, and a good chance to exchange gifts. It is customary for the bride and groom to bestow a gift upon each of their attendants as a “thank you” for their involvement. Being in a wedding party can sometimes be very time-consuming and in some cases very expensive, so a gift is a great way to show your appreciation. Typically the bride will give the gifts to her bridesmaids, and the groom his groomsmen. The attendants can also give a gift to the couple to wish them well in their lives together.

On the Day of the Wedding couples often prepare gifts for their guests. Wedding favors are completely optional, but they are a fantastic way to send your guest home with a token of your love and friendship, and to thank them for being a part of your wedding day. Whether you give one per guest, or one per couple is completely up to you. It is meant to be a sign of your affection and should only have to be what you’re comfortable with giving and not have to measure up to any standards of etiquette. Wedding favors can also serve as mementos for the occasion. When it comes to picking out your favors, the choices are virtually limitless. There are some traditional favors still preferred in certain cultural weddings, but for the most part couples have the freedom to use their imagination and come up with something that truly reflects their personalities and that their guests will enjoy.

Leesa Mitchell’s Events in Bloom
Wedding flowers trends and ideas….

Some big trends we’ve been witnessing over the last 6 months are colour for the bride. Whether it be a highlight of her favourite colour mixed within a more traditional bouquet of creams/off whites or a full blown all fuchsia stand out bouquet; a lot of brides are saying goodbye to the muted traditional white on white.

Don’t be afraid to look at more than just the obvious resources for inspiration to bring with you to consultations. I personally love it when a client comes to me with something that says who they are; my last bride came to me with her prize possession from childhood a bright orange corduroy handbag. Continually I encourage brides to look beyond the bridal magazine for ideas, there is inspiration everywhere. Design magazines, fashion, vintage fabrics, gardens, and art are just a few areas that can be used to create a look so elegant you might end up in the pages of design yourself! Imagine showing up to the consultation with paint chips? Why not? A floral designer who gets excited by these types of gestures is one that wants to stretch the limits of design and make your décor unforgettable and most importantly fun!

Reduce, reuse and recycle. Green is important and it should be everywhere. We make a valiant effort to use organic friendly flowers every chance we get and everything else we can do to stay earth minded. If this is something important to you don’t be afraid to ask if this is something that is important to your floral designer. You can also think of ways to reduce and reuse your wedding floral order. Why not reuse your bouquets as décor for the reception? Many times I have provided empty vases or containers to be placed on the head table, cake table or bar for the bouquets to be placed in. Not only do they look beautiful it will prevent you and your attendants from worrying what to do with their flowers while they are having a great time! In a few cases we have volunteered to drop off some of the arrangements at local hospitals, old age homes and women’s shelters. Flowers often last for days and sometimes they aren’t used for anything more then just getting through the wedding day so why not bring a little joy into a stranger’s day?

Décor is just one detail, but it is a detail that really makes a big difference in the big day. It is important to really connect with your floral designer, make sure you’re getting what you want but also to understand that they are a professional and you shouldn’t be afraid to put some trust into what they are suggesting so long as you are comfortable with them. You will have so many other things to worry about; we are here to make your life easier so our job is to make you confident in our ability to see your vision into a reality.

You’ve worked your ass off for months to make this wedding the wedding of your dreams. Everything is all set and you are ready to walk that aisle… But before you do that we want you to go through our list of wedding day DOs and DONTs. These are simple reminders that could spell the difference between a wedding day success and a wedding day disaster.

DOs
Eat a good satisfying breakfast. Chances are you will not be able to eat a full meal for the rest of the day.

Have a dip in the tub. This will help calm your nerves and help you feel relaxed.

Prepare early. Have your make-up and hair done ahead of time. Have your attendants arrive early too.
Apply white or colorless polish. Unless you are wearing a colored gown, do not put on colored nail polish as it will overpower your whole attire.

Bring a bridal pouch with you to carry your wedding day necessities. You do not want to be calling on your mother, sister, best friend, or wedding planner everytime you need a lip gloss.

If you haven’t written your vows and speech yet, write them neatly in a small index card. Do not ask somebody to write it for you.

Eat a little before leaving for the ceremony. Keep a candy or two in your pouch.

Keep an emergency kit in the car. Stuff it with panty hose, safety pins, bobby pins, spot remover, aspirin, needles and thread, a pair of scissors.

Keep a blush and lip gloss with you for touch-ups.

Spend some time with your guests especially your family.

Enjoy your wedding day.

DONTs
Do not overdo the make-up. You do not want to look like a vampire on your wedding pictures.

Don’t be late. Allow extra time for the unforeseen – traffic, detours, etc.

Do not trust your wedding rings to your ring bearer. Ask a more responsible adult to safekeep them for you.

Do not ask unexpected guests (most of the time, invitees who did not RSVP but decided to attend in the end) to pay for their meals (this happens).

You do not want to ruin the most important day in your life by getting involved in the details of the wedding. Leave that to the wedding planner.

Do not forget to bring your sense of humor with you. You will need tons of this especially when things are not going the way you wanted to.

Going on a vacation on your own is always an exciting adventure. Without the help of travel agents, planning a vacation itself is a fun journey. Your honeymoon is perhaps one of the greatest journey in your life. While you are busy preparing for your wedding, equal attention and effort must be devoted to plan for a lovely honeymoon as well. The following are some useful tips for you and your partner.

1. Suggested itineraries – Begin your planning by reading suggested itineraries. Almost all tourism boards have their own suggested itineraries for you. Some itineraries are thematic such as the shopping itinerary, arts itinerary or the great food itinerary. There are also suggested itineraries from hotel chains. Some hotels do offer themed getaways such as ‘mountains and lakes’, ’spa and wellness’ or ‘romance packages’. You can also get suggested itineraries from travelogues, travel forums and travel blogs.

2. Events Calendar – The events calendar of the city is extremely useful. Some cities will list their events thematically such as arts, exhibitions, tours, festivals, music, markets and sports events. Look out for free events too. Besides the day, time and venue, you can get to know the essential highlights of the events and the ticketing information if applicable. It is always interesting to know the history of the festival or the cultural event as well.

3. Transportation – Booking your coach, train or ferry journey is always a must to secure a seat. Sometimes, you may get early bird fares by booking your journey in advance. Another great deal is the esaver fare, exclusive for those who book on-line. Great for honeymooners is the companion fares, weekends getaways or coach passes. Always note the boarding point of the coach and be there 15 minutes earlier to wait for the coach. All modes of transportation have their own baggage allowances and rules. If you intend to bring along bigger items such as surf board or bicycles make sure that they are acceptable and find out if a charge is imposed. Always bring along a copy of your reservation request or confirmation number to avoid any unhappy dispute. Should you wish to book your transportation at the destination, remember to note the location, operating hours and contact details of the ticketing office.

4. Accommodation – Never leave home without securing your accommodation. Reservations policies differ for each accommodation. Some accommodations simply require an email, others need a 10% deposit while the rest requires your credit card number to secure the booking. Usually, you will receive a confirmation number for your reservation. Always make a record of the number in case you need to make any changes to your reservation in the future. Always read the fine print regarding its cancellation policy as some unique accommodations such as farmstays and bed n breakfasts may require 14 days cancellation notice. Accommodations may also impose a minimum stay policy. Do your best to select an accommodation which is well-located; that will save you time and money. Accommodations are likely to have special deals, weekend getaways or free nights offers; do look out for their best internet rate as well.

5. Trip Planner – A trip planner gives you all the essential information that you need to plan a journey. It provides you with the total travel time, walking distance and transfer time of different transport. Some planners also include the option of searching for the fastest itinerary or the lowest fare itinerary. Always use a trip planner to find out the arrival and departure times of the train or coach so that you won’t miss your transport. You may need to inform your accommodation of your check-in time. If you need to make a transfer, get the timing of the various transport correct.

6. Maps – Maps are essential to a successful trip. Don’t lose your way and waste time. Get the airport maps, the train station maps, the subway maps, the city maps and the attractions maps. If the train station is a distance to your accommodation, make sure you get the directions correct. Honeymooners usually love self-drive vacations. Maps are always handy if you need to drive around.

7. Freebies – Look out for freebies. There are many freebies that can save you money. For instance, free transport in the city, free airport pickups, free entries to attractions on certain days, 2 for 1 entry, free attraction shuttle, free guided tours in museums, zoos or aquariums and more. There are also discount coupons which you can print out from the website of the attractions.

8. Amenities and Facilities – Always note the amenities and facilities available at your accommodation, attractions, airports, train, coach or ferry stations. For instance, you need not bring a hair dryer if your accommodation is able to provide one; you may wish to have a picnic at some attractions such as zoos or farms which have a picnic area; otherwise lockers at train or ferry stations will be useful if your check out time is much earlier than your train schedule. You may also wish to note the available ATMs and credit card facilities.

9. Rules, rules, rules – Always read the rules of the airlines, airports, attractions, accommodations, train stations and different transportation modes. Remember rules do change; keep yourself updated and do not assume that you know the rules. For instance, do note the station hours, ticketing hours, checked baggage hours at the train station. Equally important are cancellation policies.

10. Sightseeing passes – There are many destinations which allow you to book your sightseeing passes on-line. Sightseeing passes offer freebies, free entries or discounted entries to a number of attractions as well as shopping and dining offers. Usually, it has a visitor guide book which contains maps, essential information on the train and ferry system, sample itineraries, shopping and dining guide and details of the attractions. Some sightseeing passes give you the option to include unlimited travel on different modes of transportation for a specific number of days. You may wish to find out if the city which you are visiting also operates a free city shuttle or has a travel pass before making a decision. Plan your itinerary wisely and make the most out of your sightseeing pass. However, do not be over ambitious and get yourself exhausted during the trip. Getting popular are combo packages which allow you to enter a few attractions at a discounted rate. However, do ask yourself if you are interested in all the attractions in the package ? Make a wise choice.

11. Weather and Climate – This is really an important factor. You definitely would not want your honeymoon to be disrupted by storms and hurricanes. Always visit the website of the Meteorological Authority to get an accurate forecast of the weather. Certain countries do advise you to bring along sunblock and take preventive measures against sunburn. For countries which experience the four seasons and you wish to enjoy some of the seasonal flowers, the Meteorological Authority may be able to provide you with information on the blooming dates of the various flowers.

12. Important contact numbers – Before you leave your country, always note the contact numbers and address of your country’s Embassy at your destination. It is always better to be prepared should you need to contact them.

Have a happy and blessed honeymoon.

People’s lives are getting increasingly busier and more tightly scheduled so thatís where Save the Date announcements come in handy. You want to make sure that your guests, especially family and close friends, keep the date of your wedding open when planning their schedules. To ensure this, you’ll want to consider sending out Save the Date notices shortly after you have set your wedding date, especially if it is several months in the future or around a holiday.

Proper etiquette doesn’t dictate that these advance notices have to be sent but in today’s world it helps your guests in their planning so they can be sure to be with you sharing in the celebration of one of the most important days of your life. If you do decide to send them out, you are not required to send them to every one of your guests but you’ll probably want to at least include close family members and friends. Guests who will have to travel to be in attendance will find them especially helpful for giving them plenty of travel preparation time particularly if you are having a destination wedding.

It’s easy to be creative when sending out your Save the Dates since there are so many different varieties and designs available.

Magnets: have become a favorite selection and why not since your guests can easily stick them onto their refrigerator as their reminder. Some magnets have the option of including a photo and some actually show a calendar of your wedding date month with your date circled for easy reference.

Scratch Off Cards: are a fun, unique way of announcing your wedding date. Your date will only be visible to guests after they have scratched off the appropriate area on the card similar to lottery tickets. They come in great playful designs sure to make your guests smile.

Announcement Cards: can be as creative or as simple as you like. They come in varying designs, colors and themes from whimsical to more traditional. Some of them even come in creative shapes.

All designs are printed with your wedding date and names and some even give the option of including the wedding location. Blank white mailing envelopes are usually included in the price no matter which design you choose. Be sure to list at the bottom of your Save the Date the added line, invitation to follow, so guests won’t assume that this is the actual wedding invitation. This is also why itís imperative that everyone who receives your Save the Date will also receive your wedding invitation.

Wedding invitations play an important role in planning your wedding, and in today’s society, Save the Dates are becoming increasingly popular because of your guestsí busy schedules. You want to do everything you can to make sure family and friends will be able to share in the joy of your wedding day.

How much wedding experience do you have?

There is more to than asking “how many weddings have you done?” Many people will claim they have event planning experience however planning a corporate event is very different from planning a wedding. Anyone who tells you that since planning their own wedding they decided to start the business is probably not a good sign. Although planning their own wedding was fun planning someone else’s is not an easy task.
It is also good to ask about their education and if they belong to any associations relevant to their profession as a wedding coordinator or planner.
How do your services work?
Depending on what service you choose ask the coordinator to review the entire process including the “day of” to make sure you are clear of what she is doing for you. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what a wedding coordinator does and doesn’t do so ask questions if you are not sure. This is what the consultation is for.

How do you charge your fees?

Wedding coordinators or planners may charge by the hour, a flat rate, percentage of the wedding budget or by doing an estimate of their time.

Do you receive referral fees from vendors?

Many years ago this may have been okay however times have changes and accepting referral fees (also known as “kick backs”) is now deemed unethical. Since the bride and groom are your client payment should come from your client only.
What other services do you offer?
Some coordinators may offer other wedding services that may seem like you are getting a better deal or killing two birds with one stone, but keep in mind that this is not necessarily true. It is best to leave details such as floral, décor, etc., to the professionals who specialize in this field. You coordinator already has much to do with making sure all of these vendors and your other details are kept organized and completed in a timely manner.

What is your emergency procedure?

Having a back up coordinator is important and should be stated on your service agreement, but also make sure that this back up possess the same skill level as you actual coordinator. You don’t want an assistant coordinating your day for the fee of a professional coordinator.

How many weddings do you coordinate per day or weekend?

There are many details to remember and coordinate for just one wedding alone so it is best to go with someone who will devote their time and attention your day and your day only.

May we check references?

Although getting past client references are important ask for one or two reputable vendor references.

Post Interview: How to Decide on “The One”?

After you’ve interviewed your potential wedding coordinator, go home and let it simmer. Even if you got all the right answers to your questions, you still need to ask yourself a few. This is just as important.
_ Did I feel calmer when I was speaking with this professional, or more anxious?
_ Did he or she make me feel important, respected?
_ Do I feel understood?
_ Do I feel like I have his or her full attention?
_ Did I feel rushed?
_ Do I feel comfortable enough to voice all my concerns?
_ Do I like the way this person presented themselves?

Answering these questions will also help you decide on what vendor or supplier is right for you.

Everything about your wedding, starting with your wedding invitations, should reflect your own personal style. Now, more than ever, couples are doing everything they can to make their wedding day uniquely personalized.

You and your fiancÈ chose the location, theme and colors of your wedding based on your personal preferences. Since your wedding invitations are an introduction to your wedding, they should reflect your choices and ultimately your personalities and styles.

It used to be that wedding invitations were always very traditional in their color and appearance. Today, wedding invitations come in a vast array of exciting colors, styles, sizes and themes to reflect the creativity of modern wedding couples.

Not to say traditional is out of date, but today your options are truly unlimited. There are choices based on seasons, hobbies, color combinations, themes, ceremony locations, ethnic backgrounds, flowers, etc. Your wedding invitations can have a modern contemporary look or they might feature photos of youngsters sharing tender moments.

Your choices donít end with the wedding invitation itself. Thereís the font style and ink color. Again, there is an impressive selection of font styles to fit any type of wedding design. Just keep in mind you want to choose a style that your guests will find easy to read. The more script the style, the more difficult it usually is to read. Colored ink choices are not quite as abundant as font styles, but there are still plenty to accommodate your chosen wedding colors.

Here are some questions for you to consider when choosing your wedding invitation style:
-In what type of setting are you getting married ñ church, formal, casual, outdoor, destination?
- What is the color scheme of your wedding?
- Is there an overall theme to your wedding?
- Do you want to incorporate a specific ethnic or religious theme?
- In what season will your wedding take place?
- What type of flowers are you having in your wedding?
- Do you want to include your photo on your invitations?
- What is your wedding invitation budget?

Another great idea for personalizing your wedding invitations is to include a favorite line of poetry, a beloved quotation, a particular Bible verse, or words from a special song. Many times the company who prints your invitations will also have a large selection of small verses to choose from. Just be sure your chosen wedding invitation style will have enough room for these extra lines of printing.

Your wedding invitations should be both beautiful and uniquely personal, just like your wedding ceremony. With all of todayís gorgeous choices, youíre sure to find exactly what you desire.

Everybody talks about wedding invitations, but what about all the other terms and items that are associated with them. Below are explanations of some of the more common terms and items that youíll probably encounter while shopping for your invitations.

Seal n Send Invitations:
This type of wedding invitation is mailed to guests as a single-folded piece (without an envelope) having the respond postcard attached to the invitation by a perforation for easy removal. Since the respond piece is a postcard, you will save on postage for the return mailing. Prices for this product normally include seals along with a printed return address on both the back flap when initially mailing the invitation and on the perforated respond postcard.

Announcements:
For those who wonít be invited to your wedding but you would still like them to know about your marriage, you can mail them an announcement card. They can be printed on the same paper as your invitation but mailed on your wedding day or immediately after with the wording stating that your wedding has already taken place.

Reception Cards:
If there isnít enough room on your wedding invitation for listing the details of your reception or if not all guests will be invited to attend the reception, reception cards can be ordered to match your invitations and then be included as a separate insert. Please keep in mind that this card could possibly add to your mailing cost since postage is based on weight.

Response Cards:
These cards are essential to planning for your dinner/reception since an accurate guest attendance count will be needed for food and seating preparations. The response card along with its mailing envelope will be inserted with your wedding invitation. Remember to include a postage stamp on this small envelope which will also have a mailing address already printed on it so all your guests have to do is fill out the card and mail it back by the date you have printed on it.

Map Cards:
These direction cards would be included as a convenience for any guests who might not be familiar with the location of the church and/or reception.

Printed Invitation Envelope Flaps:
This option of having your return address printed on the outside envelope can save you valuable time and ensure that undeliverable wedding invitations are returned to you. There is a small cost involved but it also gives an address to those who might not be able to attend but still want to send you a card or gift.

Lined Inner Envelopes:
For a small charge, you can request your inner envelopes have a colored lining to add a special touch to your wedding invitation ensemble. Color choices will vary depending on the invitation style you choose.

Envelope Seals:
These self-adhesive labels add just the right finishing touch. They are available in many styles and are used on your outer envelope making it look like they are holding the flap down even though it has already been sealed.

Informal Notes:
These are used separately from your wedding invitations but should be included with your original order since they are usually printed on matching paper and this will save you on shipping costs. They are personalized with either your names or monogram on the front with the inside being blank for writing your thank you notes. Any leftovers can be used long after the wedding for other purposes. Blank mailing envelopes are included with them.

Not all of the above items are necessary to make your wedding invitations complete. Remember, this is your special day, so itís your decision as to which ones you would like to include as part of your invitation ensemble.

Smarty Pants was actually inspired by the planning of my own wedding.

My name is Jennifer Titton and about a month before my wedding I made myself an embroidered sweat suit. The Hoodie read “Soon to Be Mrs. Ross Titton.” Of course Ross (my husband-to-be) loved it. I mean, how flattering. Not only did he love it, strangers loved it. Every time I wore it, people would stop me and say “That is adorable! Where did you get that suit?”

This was about the same time I was trying to find gifts for my bridesmaids. I wanted to buy them something unique and fun. Then it hit me … I should make them custom embroidered sweatsuits. Just like the set I had made for myself. Only these would be personalized with their initials in their favorite color combinations. What a hit! They loved them. In fact, they all decided to wear them when we got ready on “The Big Day” as well as to Brunch the following day.

After the wedding I received many phone calls from guests who had seen the girls and wanted similar suits for their sisters, daughters, daughter-in-laws, friends, etc. You get the point. It just caught on. So, with the support of my adoring new husband (he actually thought of the name “Smarty Pants”) I started a business www.smartypantsshop.com.

Smarty Pants Custom Sweat Suits have become the must-have gift for every bride and bridesmaid. In fact, Smarty Pants was recently featured on THE NBC TODAY SHOW segment Today Throws a Destination Wedding! See our website for photos!

In addition to sweat suits, we are now making gingham lined boat totes – trés preppy. As well as children’s clothes and baby bibs by special request. Most recently we’ve added golf shirts for Grooms and other men in the wedding party. I love making our men’s shirts. I always crack a smile when I see “Soon to Be Jennifer’s Husband.”

Smarty Pants creations are limitless. We can stitch whatever you wish. If you have something in mind that you don’t see on our site, just give me a buzz!

jennifer

Thank you so much for visiting www.SmartyPantsShop.com.
We hope to hear from you soon.
