A tiny boat in the middle of the lake. Just the two of you. It must be some sort of metaphor for love, right? After all, being in that boat requires plenty of cooperation. Rowing together and making it to your final destination, while managing to have fun along the way. Being in that boat also helps you learn to enjoy the view and feel like you’re the only two people in the world. But it also requires trust. Trust that the other won’t capsize the boat. And if some outside force manages to tip the boat over, trust that the other will be there to rescue you. That’s love.

During their engagement shoot, Kelci + Matt were photographed all around Charlotte, North Carolina, at various spots that hold special meaning to them. It’s clear that photographer Emily Chidester got to know the couple quite well and wanted to make the shoot entirely “them.” In addition to all kinds of wonderful locations, Matt brought along the canvas he used when asking Kelci to marry him. It says, “Keep calm and marry on.” And that’s exactly what Kelci + Matt are planning to do.
Have you ever seen a couple that simply can’t be apart? That’s Kelci + Matt. In fact, it’s tough to find a shot where they aren’t completely wrapped up in each other. Not just holding hands or standing close, but holding on tight and never letting go. They are the kind of couple that sit on the same side of the booth at the diner, while they sip Kelci’s favorite Coke. And they never look happier than when they’re wrapped up in a quilt together, as close as they can possibly get.
But it’s those photos in the boat, specifically the one of Matt holding Kelci and kissing her forehead, which will stick with me for a long time. The simplicity of the photos show just how deep the pair’s relationship is. And just how far they’re going to make it in life. Together. Keep calm and marry on.
